Celebrating the centuries old Croatian warrior spirit

A few years ago, I decided to commission a work of art that would celebrate the fighting spirit of Croatians through out the centuries. That work is now complete.

I wanted something that would incorporate symbolism that spans the 1000 year history of the Croatian nation. Simultaneously, I did not want to align this work with any particular political party, movement, historical event or person nor was there a desire on my part to replicate anything done in the past. This work had to be something that transcends both time and history, something that would unite all true patriotic Croats, regardless of their individual political and social beliefs.

The knife was created by an extraordinarily talented artist who is an expert in creating fine knives with gemstone handles as well as hand crafted accessories such as sheaths and cases. This work is one of a kind.

The blade is sharp and fully functional. This is not just a decorative piece. It is made from one of the highest quality machine steals available.

On the blade there is an engraving of the “Croatian Pleter” or “Croatian Weave”. This pattern is centuries old and can be found on Croatian churches dating back to the 9th century. There is a Glagolitic script on the blade that translate to a famous 19th century motto from Ante Starcevic, “Bog i Hrvati” or “God and the Croats”. This motto also appears on the hand crafted sheath. On the blade and sheath the “Croatian Cross” can be found and its origins are said to date back a 1000 years as well. The church has also been the corner stone of Croatian culture and identity and had to be incorporated into the design. The blade also includes engravings of the “Croatian Trefoil”. The trefoil has been a common symbol within the Croatian armed forces of the 20th and now 21st century.

Finally, there is the Hrvatski Grb or “Croatian Coat of Arms” in the handle. The checkerboard coat of arms symbolizes “Croatian” as nothing else possibly can. If you’re Croatian, you know exactly what I mean. The handle is made from a black jade gemstone while the grb itself is made from white and red gemstones. Needless to say, if there is any part of this work that stands out the most, it is the coat of arms on the handle.

This 21st century knife is a tribute to the 1000 year struggle of the Croatian people for freedom and independence and to those brave souls who gave their lives for that ideal.

I hope you appreciate this work as much as I do.
